Well, here it is nearing the end of April 2015 and the price of gasoline at the pump is already going up. It was nice to be able to fill up my tank with gas at dirt cheap prices. But thanks to Saudi Arabia trying to bury the US oil industry our gas prices are increasing again. Here are a few ideas I have for saving money on gas.
First, you gotta learn how to use GasBuddy.com. This is a great website because everyone shares where they bought gas and how much they paid for it. I often look up local gas prices with GasBuddy because I don't like paying too much for gas no matter how cheap it gets.
Some gas stations sell low-quality gasoline to bring people in. I found that out the hard way. So if you suddenly see people saving 10 cents or more per gallon of gas on local fillups, check to see what the octane ratings are. Chances are the stations are selling lower-than-normal octane gas. This is not really good for your car and you get lower mileage so you use more gas.
The best prices are usually at shopping clubs like Sam's Club and Costco. If you don't have a membership then you can't buy their gas but you may be able to get some pretty good prices from major chains like Wal-mart. You won't believe how much gas prices change from week to week.
Next, keep your car clean. This sounds crazy but dirt creates drag on a vehicle and the more dirt you let build up on your car or truck the more gas it uses. A lot of guys who go four-wheeling or mudding leave a lot of dirt on their trucks and they pay an extra percentage in gas prices because of that. So keep it clean, guys, and you'll squeeze a few more miles out of that gas tank.
Finally, just drive less. I know that is hard to do especially if you live far from work but every time you go shopping think about where you can park your car and just walk for what you need. The less you drive from store to store the more gas you save.
And another great benefit is that walking is good for you. Sure it may be tough at first but as you get used to it you won't be bothered so much. This may not be a good option if you have to walk through bad weather but take advantage of the sun as much as possible.
You can also cut back on your driving by NOT driving around town during rush hour. Either get to work early or leave late so that you don't burn as much gas on your commutes. Car-pooling is also a great idea. Every day you and your work-friends can take turns driving people to lunch (or picking up lunch). Just start thinking about ways NOT to drive before gas prices get really high again. That way when everyone else is feeling the pinch it won't be so bad for you.
